One of the types of storage media, the USB flash drive is playing an important role in dominating the market. A USB flash drive is much popular because of the size and the compactness. It actually behaves as if it is the portable hard drive. It has many provisions that provide you the option of transferring the data that is most important. The data transfer is an important part of any computer system. Also this type of the storage media can be used also for the back up or archiving of the small but important data like the personal or the business emails etc. The ease is that it can be carried in a pocket along with a keychain or so.

The USB flash drives are also available in the form of the mp3 player. The important entertainment as per the new generation is concerned. This also comes in along with the radio and the FM players. The connectivity to the computer is also easy. It is considered as one of the plug and play device. The USB drives are easily connected to the computer through the USB socket. In some of the operating systems the driver is already built in like the Microsoft Windows Xp etc.

Earlier the USB drive needed as software driver that was to be installed in the operating system. The earlier operating systems such as the windows 98 and all; does not have any built in drivers. The drivers need to be installed manually. The USB device’s importance is that it can be connected to the computer even when it is already running. In most of the cases where the other drives are to be connected the system is to be switched off prior to the installation. The files and the explorer can be other wise normally seen in the explorer window.

The USB flash drives usually use the protocol for the USB’s to interoperate along with the PCs and the other devices that have the USB port. Mostly the USB Flash Drives utilize the technology of the mass storage class drivers. This is the same technique as used in the operating systems such as the Microsoft Windows new versions.

The capacity, of in terms of the storage that is available in the USB flash drives that are currently available is to 2 GB of storage. The USB disk drives are gaining much popularity as comparable to the other devices of the storage media like the DVD or the CD; because of the portability. Also in the case of the CD’s or the DVD’s if the data is written once then it cannot be erased. Exceptionally in some cases like the rewritable discs, there is the possibility of rewriting the data. The data should be completely erased in order to write it again over the disc. Where as in the USB devices the data can be written or erased easily with out any need of the burner software as in the case of the CD or the DVD discs. The data can be written or removed as if in the case of the floppy disk drives; the only difference is that the data storage capacity is more in terms of the USB flash drives. Also the uploading of the data is much faster than in the case of the other removable devices such as the CD’s or the DVD’s.

The USB drives are usually fragile and should be handled with care. In case if they are fallen or dropped the device may easily sustain any physical damage. More over the efforts and much research and development is being made in this area for the development of the technology.
