> Troubleshooting Installed Hard Disk Drives
The hard disk drives as we know come in many different types and various forms. But there may exist; some problems with them in the event of a hardware failure or some incompatibility issue. Consider the computer system when it is turned on; the expectation of the user of the computer system is that the system should start or boot properly as expected by the user. If this is not the case and the operating system is not loaded from the hard disk drive and the usual desktop is not displayed then there might be some problem with the hardware devices like the hard disk drive. There are also other options that are possible that there are logical corruptions in the hard disk drive. The other possibilities are that the RAM or the primary memory is damaged. Let us discuss if the problem is with the hard disk drive. In such a case the appropriate message that is displayed is the “boot disk failure”. Usually in the default mode the hard disk drive is the second boot up device. Although this sequence can be changed but the default first boot device is the floppy disk drive. The information to load the operating system is actually in the boot sector of the hard disk drive that is necessary to boot the computer in a correct manner and to load the operating system. If the hard disk drive is not working properly then this boot sector is not loaded. There are several reasons of why this might have happened and some among them are explained briefly. The first suspect is the power connections or the failure of the data cable from the hard disk drive to the mother board. There may also be a problem in the SMPS – Switch Mode Power Supply. Another reason also relating to the hard disk drive is the incorrect configuration of the hardware. The incorrect configuration of the BIOS will also lead to the failure of the boot up process. Let us consider the problems that are related to the hard disk drive of the Serial ATA or the IDE. There may already be a non bootable disk in the floppy drive that is hampering the loading of the operating system. As discussed above the default boot up device is the floppy disk drive. Hence if there is any floppy inside the floppy drive then the control goes directly to the first boot up device that is floppy disk drive. Else the hard disk would have loaded the operating system. So check if there is any unbootable disk in the floppy disk drive. If it so then care should be taken to remove the floppy from the floppy disk drive. After that the operating system should be normally restarted. Also the factor for which there is some trouble with the hard disk drive is that of the power supply and the data connections. So it is advisable to shut down the system and normally reconnect all the cables and again reboot the system. The jumper settings may also be responsible for the non working condition of the hard disk drive. Hence the settings of the jumpers should be considered in detail before the connections are being made again to boot the system normally from the hard disk drive.
