> Mini Disks The mini disk is a storage device that is popularly used for the storage of the data. Its popularity is based on the fact that it is small and sleek and quite handy as compared to the other storage devices. In the description this is a compact digital audio disk. This mini disk is from the Sony Corporation and comes usually in the read only format. There is also the availability of the rewritable form of the mini disk. This was as said was introduced by the Sony Corporation in the year of 1993. This mini disk is not as much popular in any other country as it is in the Japan. The physical size of the mini disk is 2.5" inches. But the memory capacity is about the size of 140 mega bytes. The mini disk is also available for the CD as well as for the DVD. This means that even the CD’s and the DVD’s both are available in the form of the mini disks. The maximum capacity in the mini disk CD’s that is presently available is about the 192 mega bytes. The same in case of the DVD’s is about the size of 1.4 giga bytes. This device can hold the music of about some 74 min. The compression scheme that is used here is that Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding – ATRAC. This is again from the Sony. This scheme ATRAC eliminates the inaudible signals. These mini disks can even store the track and the titles that are usually displayed by a media player. In the rewritable mini disks the technology that is used is that of magneto optic. They are usually come in 60 min, 74 min and even the 80 min cartridges. Apart from the Sony, even now the other market players have introduced the mini disks. They include the HP, Imation which are the leading in this segment; and still many more. The mini disk falls under the category of the pre mastered disks. The pre mastered disks are that where there is the usage of the optical playback system and the mastering process. These things are similar also in the CDs. The signals that are recorded are pre-mastered pits and the recordable mini disks are very similar to the CDs except only in the size. The Eight to Fourteen Modulations or the EFM is used in the modification of those CD's. The code known as the Advanced Cross Interleaved Reed Solomon Code or the ACIRC is employed here as the CIRC code. The mini disk has the data structure and the operation of the functioning
similar to that of a computers hard disk drive. That is it can similarly
used in the explorer and the data can be read subsequently as if from
the hard disk. The permissions like the read only or the write are dependent
on the type of the disk; that is whether it is read only or rewritable
etc. The bulk of the mini disc may contain the data or the information
that is pertaining to the music itself. And a small section may also contain
the Table of Contents of the user. This provides the playback device along
with some information that is vital to the number and the location of
the tracks that are present on the disk. The functioning is similar to
the hard disk; because it is possible to rename the tracks. It is also
possible to add the tracks or erase them. |
