In October 1998 the Sony Corporation launched a device that is called as the memory stick. This is actually a memory storage chip that is small and compact and which can be used for the storage of data in many different devices. These devices are available in many different formats like the specifications below will explain in detail.

Memory stick specifications:

The specifications may be in terms of the transfer of the speed. The memory sticks are available in two forms one is the Standard and the other is the PRO. In the Standard the maximum write speed is about 14.4 mega bits per second equivalent to about 1.8 mega bytes per second. And the maximum read speed in the Standard memory stick is about 19.6 mega bits per second that is equivalent to 2.5 mega bytes per second. The same in the PRO is as follows.

The transfer speed is about 160 mega bits per second that is equivalent to the 20 mega bytes per second. And the minimum write speed is about 15 mega bits per second. The form factors for the standard are in the following measurements: 50.0 mm (width) x 21.5 mm (height) x 2.8 mm (depth). And the measurements in the for the Duo are 31.0 mm (width) x 20.0 mm (height) x 1.6 mm (depth)

Some of the formats that are available in the memory sticks are the described below. The white memory stick PRO holds around the data of up to 2GB. This was introduced in year of 2003. The PRO supports the features such as the faster recording that is about 160 Mega bits per second. It also has a protection system of the MagicGate copyright. Before the PRO format, the MagicGate cards that were used had up to 128MB. The memory sticks with MagicGate had similar functions as that of the regular memory sticks. But the only difference is that they supported the Sony's ATRAC3. This is the audio recording format which includes the copyright protection. The copyright protection system is SDMI digital rights. Some of the music players by the Sony Corporation accept MagicGate cards only like the network walkmans.

The memory sticks that are used in the cell phones and the other similar devices, has the ‘Duo’ that is the smaller card which is inserted into an adapter that is specially made for it. It fits into the regular Memory Stick slot. The Duo card has the feature that it can then be used as the portable device from a memory stick device to a device ‘Duo’. The Duo cards have the capacity of up to 128MB. The PRO Duo still have the capacity of about 512MB.

The memory sticks that are introduces by the Sony Corporation are used in many devices such as the cameras, the PDA’s and the mobile hand set phones. They are also used in the mp3 players and the digital radios etc. The memory sticks are also available for the Input and the Output devices such as GPS – Global Positioning Systems and also in the Bluetooth modules.

If the memory stick is required to be connected to the computer, then it should be used through the USB port. The USB port serves as the gateway for the memory sticks. The memory sticks are also used to upgrade the memory in already available memory chips.
