> Digital Versatile Disk DVD The CD ROM was the disk drive that was used for the back up of the data. But as the technology has advanced the DVD has gained momentum to provide the back up of the data and the information that is used to store the data. DVD was actually used for the videos. It was used for increasing the clarity in the videos. And the name was initially the Digital Video Disk. But the DVD found its application in the computers also. Hence the name is also referred to as the Digital Versatile Disk. The technology is similar to that used in the CD ROM. Both the CD ROM and the DVD are similar in nature. Both are the optical disks. But the major difference is that in terms of the storage capacity. The DVD has more storage capacity than that of the CD’s. The maximum capacity of the storage in the CD that has an extended memory is about the 800 mega bytes of data. But in the case of the DVD the same single DVD that has a physical size as equal to that of the CD that is currently available is 4.7 giga bytes. Even the newly available DVD’s has the storage capacity of about 40 giga bytes. Some of the DVD’s that are now available are dual sided. That is the information can be stored on both the sides of the disk. The DVD’s are also available in different formats that are the DVD +R, DVD-R, DVD RAM, DVD RW etc. The DVD has superb clarity when it is burnt as Digital Video Disk. The video that is stored over the disk is in the format that is supported by the DVD player. The DVD player that is available for the television sets is quite different from the one that is available for the computer systems. DVD ROM drive in the computer only supports the reading of the data from the DVD disk. If there is the requirement for burning the data to the DVD then for that the DVD RW or the so called DVD writer should be used. The DVD writer is available for the DVD’s that supports almost all the formats of the DVD. The DVD RW is the rewritable format of the DVD. The mini DVD’s are also available that can store up to 1.2 giga bytes of the data. The different formats that are supported by the DVD are briefly explained below: The DVD-R/RW means that the disk is recordable once and rewritable. The other format that is the DVD+R/RW also means the same as that of the DVD-R/RW. The DVD-ROM means that the disk is read only memory. The DVD-RAM is the type of disk that is random access rewritable which means that after write checking the integrity of the data is active. The types of the DVD include the one like the DVD 5 which is the single sided and also the single layer DVD with the capacity of 4.7 giga bytes. The other is the DVD 9 which is the single sided and the double layer has the capacity of about 8.5 giga bytes. Another is the DVD 10 that is also the double sided and is the single layer on both the sides. Its capacity is about 9.4giga bytes. The DVD 14 is the double sided disk with the double layer on one of the sides but a single layer on the other side. The capacity of this disk is about 13.3 giga bytes. Finally the DVD 18 is the double sided disk that has double layer on both of the sides. It has the capacity of about 17.1 giga bytes. |
