> Digital Data Storage The concept of Digital Data Storage is used for storing and backing up computer data on magnetic tape. Digital Data Storage uses tape of 4 millimeters wide and the tape is 60 meters long. Material technology allowed the length to be increased significantly and a Digital Data Storage tape drive uses helical scanning for recording, the same process used by a video cassette recorder. There are two read heads and two write heads which are provided in the drive. The read heads verify the data that has been written & the write heads rewrite the data. In order to keep the drive in the working condition the tape heads should be cleaned to be kept in good conditions. Digital Data Storage tapes have life of at the maximum of 10 years. The different type of Digital Data Storage is: DDS-1 (Digital Data Storage – 1): This version is used to store up to 1.3 GB compressed on a 60 meter cartridge and 2 GB uncompressed on a 90 meter cartridge. DDS-2 (Digital Data Storage – 2): This version stores up to 4 GB uncompressed on a 120 meter cartridge. Digital Data Storage – 2 is best suited for small network servers. DDS-3 (Digital Data Storage – 3): stores up to 12 GB uncompressed on a 125 meter cartridge. The Digital Data Storage –3 drive works fine for medium-sized servers. Digital Data Storage – 3 uses Partial Response Maximum Likelihood techniques. Partial Response Maximum Likelihood is used to eliminate electronic noise for a cleaner data recording. DDS-4 (Digital Data Storage – 4): can store up to 20 GB uncompressed on a 150 meter cartridge. The businesses of mid-size businesses can get the benefit from DDS-4. DAT 72 Digital Data Storage – 72 can stores up to 36 GB uncompressed on a 170 meter cartridge. The Digital Data Storage – 72 is backwards compatible with DDS-3 and -4. The data transfer rate is about 7 MB/s. The digital storage of information has the advantages over analog techniques and are very much similar to the digital communication of information holds advantages over analog communication. This is not to say that digital data storage is unequivocally superior to analog, but it does address some of the more common problems associated with analog techniques and thus finds immense popularity in both consumer and industrial applications. Digital data storage uses the digital computation technology and find out the natural application of the computers. If we are going to store data regarding the magnitude of a voltage signal then a small chunk in the magnetic material is noticed. Many magnetic materials as we knows are known for strength of magnetization by encoding different types of data into specific binary number schemes, digital storage allows us to archive a wide variety of information that is often difficult to encode in analog form. A wider range of text is encoded using the standard, in like manner. Any kind of numerical data can be represented using binary notation on digital media, and any kind of information that can be encoded in numerical form. The advantage of digital data storage is the data does not get corrupted. |
