> Compact Disc Drives CD ROM The CD ROM is the discs that are optical and are used for storage of data. They were introduced by the Philips and the Sony Corporation. The CD – I which stands for the Compact Disk interactive is CD playing device that can be connected directly to a home TV set. It is based on the Motorola 68000 series chip. It provides the home user with the live video and audio interaction. The CD – I or more commonly referred to as the VCD player has the following components: The CD system, Audio system and the video system. It has the input devices such as the remote control and mouse also. There is also a built in non volatile RAM. The CD Rom drive is an optical devices and its functional performance considered as the multimedia device. The CR ROM devices can contain the multiple media data in addition to the text. However only one type of the data can be accessed from the drives at a time. To synchronize two types of types of the data that is the audio and the animation one type of the data would have to be copied to the hard disk. The CD ROM drive is the device that is used to only read the data from the CD disk. The data using the CD ROM cannot be written over to the disk. For this purpose the CD RW is a necessary one. CD RW is the rewritable drive that can perform both the functions of reading the disk well as writing to the disk. The writing of the data is possible only with help of software that is called as the CD burner software. More over the data cannot be written to the drive as in the case of a normal floppy disk or the hard disk drive. The process of writing the data or any information to the CD is called as the burning. The data once burnt to the CD ROM disk cannot be erased as the name itself suggests. The writing of the data is done only at a time. The data that is already written to the rewritable CD can again be erased with the help of this software. But still there is no such software into existence which can partially erase the data. All the available CD burner software requires the data to be completely erased and then burnt over the rewritable CD. However the data can be written in the form of multisession. The CD ROM presently is used for the backup of the important data or the information of any kind. The CD ROM presently has the capacity of about 700 mega bytes. The extended CD ROM has the capacity of the 800 mega bytes. The CD ROM has the speed that is taken into consideration like presently the speed available is that of 52x. The CD ROM is manufactured by some of the leading names that include the HP, Samsung, LG, Asus, Sony, Phillips, Creative Max, Liteon etc. The CD ROM is the thin optical disk that is used for the storage of the data. Presently after the introduction of the DVD’s there is much backdrop in the sales of the CD’s. The CD ROM disks must generally confirm to one additional standard that is the ISO 9660. This is an international standard that defines a file system for the CD ROM disks. This standard comes in two different types: Level One ISO 9660 – This provides DOS compatibility. The Level Two ISO 9660 – This allows longer file names. It does not allow cross platform compatibility. |
